I don't believe that things are either right or wrong, either black or white - in my world it's all relative and varying shades of grey exist in between. Religion considers sin to be the estrangement of self from God. To me, if at all there is something that could be termed as 'sin' it is the estrangement of self from self.

:-) Sin is an interesting word, which can be argued from different perspectives.
I after reading and analyzing this word for many years came to the conclusion that for a person to believe in sin or to commit sin, it is not necessary for him to believe in God or a higher power.
We humans for some reason have a sense of what is good and bad. We feel it from the stomach. Here, I do NOT mean subjective good and bad, what is good for u is good for you and bad for me is bad for me...and all that stuff.
BUT I wanted to mean something more than that. Something that we do not know where its origin could have been. Something that is independent of culture, religion & race. Infact, a child brought up without any human contact can as well sense this. It is something from beyond one's heart, mind and soul. This sense though not the truly objective points you in that "right" direction. It is through this sense one differentiates right from wrong, true from bogus, good from evil.
And I call this "the common sense"
No matter one believes in it or not...s/he has this sense in-built. As C.S.Lewis puts this sense to be the law of human nature.
If one does not obey this law then s/he goes against it. For going against or not obeying the law, s/he need not believe in the concept of SIN. But since he didn't obey the law he went against it and as a result of it he didn't obey it and as a result he went against it. Well one can continue on and on this way...but in order to make it easier for us some scholars and religion came up with an idea to define "this act" as sin.
Though religion is not the founder of the word Sin, we have references to "the result of going against/not obeying" ton full in religious books.
Isnt that kind of what I meant by 'estrangement of self from self'. Again, these are pure rambings of mine, that should not be taken seriously EVER.
Okay then we are in the same team. I just wanted to write what I believe about sin. :-)
